![]() I guess I’m not as much of a grown-up as I fear, particularly when it comes to a title like Hide and Seeker. ![]() Still, on occasion, one of those books I like sneaks through and I devour it in one gulp. Every year I put aside the children’s books that I want to read (fantasy and ghost stories and general silliness) and end up reading the serious, meaningful, emotionally wrenching stuff 90% of the time instead. We have responsibilities we have to attend to. I want chocolate chip cookies for breakfast? It’s a possibility! I want to bingewatch old British sitcoms for hours on end? Nothing could be easier! But adulthood isn’t that soft sweet song kids assume it to be. It’s great having the option to do or not do whatever I want (within reason) at any given time. ![]() There are many advantages to being a grown-up, and I’d be the first person to admit that. ![]()

Wharton was very wealthy – one of the wealthiest women in New York in the mid-19th century. Wharton wanted to reverse the stereotypes of New Englanders that other writers had been perpetuating, which were a creation of a kinder, gentler, sanitized New England. She heard a story of a sledding accident in which one woman was killed and two others were severely injured, and she decided to use it as a germ for this novel, Goldsmith said. When living in Lenox, she found this story. But while living in New England, Wharton observed a lot of poverty. Her first novels, like “The House Of Mirth,” are novels of “manners” and New York high society, said Goldsmith.
